Describe a time you missed an appointment for something

I missed my first job interview two years ago because of my carelessness. Once I lost it, I feel regret for that late even today.

At that time, as a fresh graduate, an interview appointment is valuable. I applied for Unilever as Sale executive, one of the best global companies with dynamic working environment and good benefits. I waited for about two months after attending at the IQ written test. I received an email announcing that I was one the tenth applicants who successfully passed the test. I was overjoyed when they asked me to join at the formal interview. However, I lost that chance.

The appointment was at sharply 14:00 which I thought would be at 4pm. Thus, I planned to celebrate my friend's birthday around 2pm and leave her house around 3pm for the interview because the journey would take around 45 minutes.

I prepared for the interview carefully and left my friend's house a little bit early as the city I live in has several serious problems of traffic jam. Unfortunately, it started to rain and the bus came late around 3.15pm. The traffic was very bad so the bus was moving very slowly due to the unavoidable traffic jam under heavy rain. At that time, I received a call from the company. With an angry voice, the authority informed that I missed the appointment and lost the opportunity to work at Unilever. Initially, I felt that my luck is not favoring me and felt a deep sense of anger because I thought it was not my fault but the traffic congestion. However, when I checked email again, I felt pity for me as I could not go to the appointment in time.

It becomes my invaluable experience. Since then, I always read emails and note down carefully the schedule.

Describe a sport stadium that's important in your city

The My Dinh National Stadium is one of the biggest stadiums in Vietnam which plays an important role not only for domestic sport events but also international ones. Therefore, as Hanoi people, I am so proud of this stadium.

I still remember back to 2003, the My Dinh National Stadium was the main venue for the Southeast Asian Games and was a hosting place for the opening and closing ceremony. The My Dinh National Stadium has a capacity of more than 40,000 seats; therefore, at that time, thousands of Vietnamese and visitors from different countries were there. It was gorgeous with fireworks and the whole stadium was filled with colorful light and music.

It is a multi-functional stadium with a football pitch, athletic competitions combined with curve run, straight line running, jump pitches, throw pitch, etc. Besides, there are training facilities for the teams with two convenient football training grounds next to the stadium.

My Dinh Stadium is also a place hosted AFF Suzuki Cup, AFC Champions League, V-League or VFF Cup. Most significantly, in 2013 and 2015, the stadium held an international friendly football match between Vietnam and Arsenal and another match between Vietnam and Manchester City, respectively. Therefore, My Dinh Stadium becomes more and more important in Vietnam.

Describe an area of subject that you are interested in

Biology is my favorite subject. Thanks for learning biology, I have a deep insight about living life around me from a tiny baterium to a complex human. Among different organisms, I love to elucidate the intricate mechanisms in plants.

Why am I interested in plant biology? Well, it's hard to explain. Plants, even though they are unable to move and speak, they are living things. They have their own language and have a wonderful life. Have you ever asked yourself that why plants are the only organism that have upground part and ground part? It is because carbon dioxide, light and water are the main sources for plants to grow. Water is obtained from soil through a complex root system. Roots keep a plant anchored tightly to the soil as well. Water moves up the plant's stem to the leaves. Sunlight and carbon dioxide are taken by leaves. Therefore, plants use water, light energy and carbon dioxide to make glucose, a kind of sugar and this is the food for plant to grow.

You see? Just a very simple example, plants are worth to study about. That's also a reason why I choose Plant Biotechnology as my major. By using molecular technology, I can learn more inside of plant cells and discover the mechanisms in plants. Thanks for understanding of plant biology, it is applicable to manipulate and improve crop yield. It pours more and more passion to me for my future career.

Describe a famous person in your country

The celebrity whom I would like to talk about is definitely Phan Anh, a famous host of many TV shows such as Miss Vietnam, Vietnam Idol, The Voice Vietnam, etc. He also acted in some advertisements and movies. In general, he is considered as a successful man.

It seems like normal for a person working in entertainment field; however, what he has done is beyond his career. Recently, in Vietnam, there have been a number of social issues such as tons of fishes died and affected seriously the whole mid-Vietnam, food security, and other environment problems. Phan Anh is the pioneer who made a short video. In the video, he talked about what will happen for the next generations if we continue destroying the environment by continuing unaware actions. That video has a strong impact in young people and raises a voice of responsibility for our generation.

Moreover, he is the very first one in Vietnamese showbiz that encouraged people donate for victims of a serious flood in Mid-Vietnam. Only 24 hours, he could collected 8 billion Vietnam dong. He, himself, with his friends, other singers and dancers, went to flooded areas in Ha Tinh and gave essential things and foods for people. He did not mind of doing community service.

He thinks out of the box even though he is a celebrity in entertainment, which increase his image and impact on the audience.

Describe something you ate for the first time

Malaysia is known as a multi-cultural country with fifteen tribes; therefore, their cuisine is very diverse and wonderful.

My very first dish in Malaysia is roti canai, a flatbread aspiring to be part-pancake, part-crepe served with curry. I tried roti canai at a mamak in Kualar Lumpur. Mamak is a Indian Muslim food store which usually opens 24/7. As Vietnamese, most of us don't really like curry because of its strong taste and smell. I was not an exception. So I was a little bit cautious, and took a small piece of cake, deep in curry and tried. Surprisingly, it was so awesome. The cake was light, soft and buttery on the inside but flakey and slightly crunchy on the outside. I enjoyed the cake while my friend explained to me that "roti"simply means bread and "canai" means "to knead". Therefore, roti canai's correct meaning is to stretch or push something pliable or elastic.

After that, my friend also introduced me that there were plenty types of roti such as roti telur (roti with egg fried to death inside), roti boom (roti with syrup) or roti banjir (a pyramid-shaped roti soaked in gravy). My local friend ordered for me a roti pisang, chock-full of creamily melted bananas. The sweetness from banana mixed with the soft bread was unforgettable.

Roti canai is the number one recommended food in Malaysia and I wish I could have a chance to try it again.

Describe something that you had to share with other people, such as food or accommodation

My parents teach me that sharing what we have for others is a kind of showing love to them. Actions can speak louder than words even though it's hard to be done. I learn this lesson when I share my room with one of my cousins, Linh, for a week.

My family is living in Ho Chi Minh City, one of the biggest and the most dynamic cities in Vietnam where many people would like to visit, study, have a career or even settle their lives. My parents are hospitable so they are willing to welcome all of them. Therefore, our friends or relatives from other provinces, occasionally, come to our house to stay some days whenever they travel to Ho Chi Minh City.

I remember it was summer vacation when I was around 15 years old. At that time, we were still living in our old house, which was not too big to have a guest room. Thus, when Linh visited us, I had to share my room with her.

"For a week and more than that?" – I shouted when I heard from my mom about Linh's situation. I told her that I didn't want to because my room is not big and I didn't like to share my personal space with anyone. Moreover, Linh came from a very poor province that she had an awful smell which I really hated. My mom tried to convince me and explained that Linh's family had financial problem so she came here to find a job. She also reminded me about the love that we should share with others in our life. At the very beginning, I still kept a little bit unendurable with her presence. However, after talking with her about our grandparents, other cousins, her works and future plans, we got closer and closer. Linh is a very nice and kind girl.

After a week, she left our home to stay in a dorm of a factory nearby. Since then, we still keep in touch and whenever she visits our house, I share my room with her and have so many fun events together.

Describe a piece of good news that you received

Being a doctor is my dream. Unfortunately, like a song named "I never had a dream comes true", I could not be a doctor. I failed the entrance exam to Medical University three times. However, thanks for this chance, I have a new chapter of my life.

I decided to apply for Biotechnology course in International University, Vietnam National University as my second option when I knew that I failed medical course. It was a tough decision because at that time, my family and I had no idea about Biotechnology. Other than that, there were only 10 slots left and nearly 50 candidates applied. I was so nervous. In the meantime, my parents suggested me to apply for a nurse course in Philippines because they thought it could bring a brighter future for me compared to biotechnology, which was too academic and hard to find a job. I remember that I put every effort to persuade my parents because I was not ready to live far away from my family but they felt so insecured.

One day, when I was searching for some nurse courses, the bell rang. I was heavily walking to the front door and opened it. The postman was waiting for me. He gave me an envelop and asked me to sign. I thought it was my parents' mail so I placed the mail on table without anymore notice. After two days, my mom arranged the table and saw that envelop from the university. She gave me and we read the letter together. You know how much I was happy when I knew that I was officially a student at International University. I cried happily and could not stop thanks God for this good news.

I still remember that nice memories even though I graduated. That good news brought a new chapter for my life, to be a scientist.

Describe a leader you admire

Life would be chaos without leaders. Leaders offer guidance to all members of a team to reach the aim successfully. Furthermore, leaders are the one who encourage and inspire members to have a can-do attitude. Those qualities remind me about Steven, one of my leader in high school.

That time, our school had a singing contest and every class must have at least one performance. After voting, our class decided to choir a song named "We are the world". The class committee planned to have three-week practice and asked all of the classmates to stay a bit late after school. However, as usual, forty different people had forty different schedule. There was a tense argument between classmates and the class committee, especially Steven, our current leader. Some of my friends criticized angrily that the contest was just for fun and it was not necessary to spend lots of time for practicing.

Steven, with his calm face, stood in front of the crowd and explained that because our class were divided into three groups: orchestra, choir and dancers, it was difficult to practice together. He admitted that he was a perfectionist and wanted everything going well without planning carefully. However, he asked us to practice properly to set a tone for a whole class. It was true that we did not need to get the highest prize but "hard work always pays off".

He executed a survey among classmates and together with the class committee, he planned again. Finally, the first two weeks, different groups practiced separately with a co-leader and the last week, we combined all three groups together. In the end, our class got the first prize in the singing contest and had good compliments from the judges.

Now he is a successful businessman. His leading skill is not put people under pressure but lift them up from the pressure. He understands every situation and has a vision for every project. That makes me admire him.

Describe a big company you are interested in

Unilever is a global company with a multinational business operating in more than 100 countries all over the world. Everyday, nearly 2 billion people are using more than 400 brands of great products of Unilever.

What makes Unilever different from other company is  they have different brands for one type of products. For example, Dove, Clear and Lifebuoy are three common brands for shampoos. According to young customers, they prefer Dove and Clear due to their specific functions for different types of hair while housewives, Lifebuoy shampoo is suitable for all family members. Another example is is Surf and Omo, two brands for clothes washing detergent. For this strategy, personally I think it is undeniable that Unilever could reach a wide range of customers and satisfy all of their demands.

Another point that makes me feel interested in Unilever is their working environment. That is a dynamic, innovative and fair workplace that opens for every staff an equal opportunity to improve themselves and work effectively. The company provides for employees a multiple culture and an inspiring lifestyle by recruiting people from different nations. Other than that, the company also has social programs and team building which can get closer to people in any country they are operating.

In short, I am interested in Unilever because of not only their sustainable business but also their positive social impact.

Describe an interesting public place that you like to visit

When you visit Ho Chi Minh City, you cannot forget an interesting public place, Independence Palace. This is a symbol of the victory, the independence, and the territorial integrity of Vietnam.

I visited Reunification Palace, another name of Independence Palace last summer with my Indonesian friend. Even though I live in Ho Chi Minh City, that is my first time visiting this wonderful place. It is built on the site of the former Norodom Palace which symbolizes the traditional philosophy. The total area is around 120,000 meter square. The front yard surrounded by a large park with a number of different species of forest trees brings the mellow and peaceful feelings for tourists when they walk through the entrances.

As Vietnamese, I was actually proud of the whole building architecture, which was entirely built by Vietnamese people. Most importantly, the palace was designed by Ngo Viet Thu – the first Vietnamese architect, who won the First Grand Prize of Rome in 1955. This was the home and workplace of the Presidents of South Vietnam during Vietnam War with meeting rooms and banquet rooms in the first floor, workplace for the Presidents in the second floor, entertainment rooms in the third floor and a ballroom for parties in the fourth floor. Interestingly, the ground floor was reinforced with special materials and modern equipment to control the war at that time.

Independence Palace welcomes hundreds to a thousand of visitors everyday. This is one of the most attractive sights in Ho Chi Minh City.

T: Morning, Jane, thanks for coming to see me, take a seat.

J: Thank you, Dr Coulson.

T: Now, you’re [………………………………]wondering why I wanted to talk to you.

J: Well, yes, it has been worrying me a bit.

J: I’m sorry, I’m not sure what you mean.

J: Um, yes, I think so. It was all about asking questions.

T: Well, that’s partly right, but it’s the type of questions you ask that is [………………………………]. For example, if one of the people in your group [………………………………]an idea, you need to ask yourself what evidence there is to [………………………………]this idea.

J: OK, I’ll try to do that. You [………………………………]my research project as well?

T: Yes, it’s actualty connected to the idea of critical thinking. I’m a little [………………………………]that the essay makes some [………………………………]which I’m not sure your research completely [………………………………]. For example, you make the [………………………………]that people who have difficulty with their speech probably had an [………………………………]when they were young.

J: Yes, that’s because my case study had a very bad car accident as a child and since then he has not been able to speak [………………………………].

T: OK, that's interesting. But I think you need a greater [………………………………]of data to support your findings. You can’t really rely on case studies alone. They're a great source of [………………………………]information about [………………………………], but they don’t really provide us with the quantity of information needed to make general claims. Have you checked whether there are any [………………………………]papers which talk about the connection between accidents and speech?

J: Not yet, no, but I will.

T: Yes, do. They might analyze what happens in the brain after an accident and why this might [………………………………]speech. Remember to check the date the [………………………………]was written though; research [………………………………]to go out of date quickly. Iiave you also [………………………………]experts who argue against the connection between speech problems and accidents?

J: No, I thought that that would weaken my [………………………………].

T: Well, it may well do. But it doesn’t really matter what you [………………………………]in the end, you just need to think about the [………………………………]on both sides and make a reasoned [………………………………].

J: OK, I think I see what you mean. I was also thinking about getting a higher quantity of information through sending this [………………………………]out to medical [………………………………]. Would you mind having a look at it for me…

T: Yes, sure, let’s see … Well, on the whole, it’s fine, I think. But you need to be very careful about asking ‘leading questions’. What I mean by that is some of your questions may actually suggest what answer you are looking for.

J: That’s [………………………………]. Thank you. I’ll change those questions.

T: Good So, when do you think you’ll have a first draft for me to look at?

SECTION 4

Hello everybody. So, as part of our study [………………………………]this term, we’ve researched an aspect of [………………………………]which has some kind of mystery [………………………………]to it. I’m going to talk about the [………………………………]of the Great Pyramids of Egypt. In particular, I’m going to [………………………………]on the theories surrounding how the [………………………………]were built. I’m going to start by putting pyramids into their [………………………………]context. Then I’m going to look at the different ideas [………………………………]the building of the pyramids. At the end there will be the chance to ask questions.

So, why are we so [………………………………]with the building of the pyramids? Well it’s to do with their [………………………………]size and weight. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, for example, at Giza in [………………………………], has a mass of [………………………………]tons and it is around [………………………………]tall. Approximately [………………………………]stone blocks were used to build it. Today’s architects would have difficulties building a pyramid of this size and weight in the middle of a [………………………………], even with the help of powered [………………………………]. For the architects of [………………………………], who didn't have modem technology to help them, building a pyramid must have been almost [………………………………]. There’s no doubt that they had a big work force. During the [………………………………]of building this pyramid, between [………………………………]and [………………………………]workers helped with its construction. However, this doesn’t explain how workers could lift and move a stone block which [………………………………]over two tons. There have been several theories about this from leading [………………………………].

One [………………………………]theory states that a straight ramp, or slope, was built outside the pyramid and workers could walk up the [………………………………], pulling the stone block. This [………………………………], at the top, [………………………………]the theory. As you can see, one problem is the size of the ramp. In order to get it to reach right to the top of the pyramid, the ramp would have to be around 1 km long. There wasn’t the space for this sort of ramp; pyramids were built on a high [………………………………], with other buildings around them, as shown in the diagram.

This second diagram shows another theory, which has been [………………………………]by French architect Jean-Pierre Houdin. Houdin believes that a shorter, 60- metre long ramp was used on the outside of the pyramid. Workers would pull the [………………………………]blocks up the ramp in order to build the base of the pyramid. As the bottom of the pyramid was being built using the [………………………………], a second ramp was being built, inside the pyramid. The internal ramp begins at the bottom, is about 6 feet wide, and is much less steep than a large, external straight ramp would be.

So, I’ve outlined two of the main theories [………………………………]with the building of the pyramids. I [………………………………]think that Houdin’s theory is the most believable. However, I’d like to know your opinions. Would anyone like to say what they think or ask a question?…

IELTS Speaking Cue Card Sample 58 – Topic: A City You Want To Visit

Posted: 23 Oct 2016 11:50 PM PDT

IELTS CUE CARD 58

Describe a City you want to visit. You should say:

  • Where is it?
  • Why do you want to visit it?
  • What do you know about this city?

BAND 8.0+ SAMPLE ANSWER

Honestly speaking, I have a myriad of destinations on my must – visit list around the world. However, if I have the opportunity to choose one city, I would probably pick London, which is one of the most prominent capitals around the globe. I guess the reason why I am desired to visit London has something to do with the fact that ever since I was a kid, I have always been amazed by how gorgeous and unique the architects in London are. There are also some interesting facts about London that I want to witness in real life. One of them is the fact about Big Ben tower. So far, many people see the tall clock tower and think that it is Big Ben. But in fact, Big Ben is actually a giant thirteen – ton bell inside the tower that is rung every two hours by a two hundred – kilogram hammer. The real name of the Bell is the Great Bell of Westminster. Besides Big Ben, lots of tourists also enjoy visiting Buckingham Palace, which is also extremely appealing to me since it is the home to the Queen of England. Watching the changing of the guard ceremony that takes place in front of the Palace's gate certainly will give me lots of fresh feelings. Buckingham palace is also the second largest working palace in the world after Brunei's Istana Nurul Iman. There are many other elements making London so tempting to me and pay this amazing city a visit in the future is one of the items in my wish – list.

Vocabulary:

  • A myriad of something (expression): A large number of something

Check out the first part (Part 1/2) of Sample Answers for 33 New Topics of IELTS Speaking Part 1 (September-December 2016).

Sing

Do you often like singing?

I absolutely love singing. Although I just figured out my singing ability like 3 or 4 years ago and of course it's not perfect, but singing to me is just to enjoy music, you know, often when I'm into a song, I can't help myself singing it day and night.
When do you like to sing?

I sing whenever I feel like to, you know, when I'm bored or when I'm happy. And since I'm not that type of a so-called performer, most of the time I sing for myself.

How much time do you spend in singing everyday?
Well as I already mentioned singing to me is all about enjoying myself, so unless that song is so amazing, or my voice is so surprisingly incredible on that day that I can keep singing for hours, otherwise I definitely can go a day without any singing.

What kinds of music do you like to sing?

I must say it depends on my mood. If I'm so down, singing some songs which bring back some past memories could make me feel somehow released, and on the days when I'm so motivated, so energetic, I would sing the songs that are full-of-hope and sunshine and dreams. Yeah, so you can tell that I don't stick with a certain kind of music.
Is it difficult to sing well?

Indeed. Unless you have a beautiful voice as a Gift from God, or you at least have gained yourself some basic knowledge about notes, vocal ranges and beat, etc., that it's easier for you to go further in your singing career, otherwise yes, singing well would be a huge challenge.
Do you want to be a singer?

Well, from what I’ve known, being a singer is not easy at all. It's not just about performing, but it's also involved interaction with fans and other colleagues. Based on what I've known about showbiz, and even the music industry in general, I think that is not a place for me.

Walking

Do you like walk?

Walking is unavoidable especially when you live on campus. You go to school on foot, you go buy food on foot, you walk here and there everyday. There are days that my legs actually killed me. Although I should think of it like exercise, but to be honest, I think I'm too old for everyday-walking now.
Do you like to walk on your own or with others?

Say if I'm in a hurry definitely I just walk or run as fast as I can, no time for chit chat right? But even when there's a plenty of time, walking is ideal to calm myself down, breath in some fresh air and enjoy the world outside in silence. So I think I'm more into walking on my own.
Would you say that your city is a good place for walking?

Walking is not as popular as it used to be in Ho Chi Minh City, as more and more people prefer riding a motorbike. So currently there are fewer parks or walking areas. Moreover, walking under such hot weather with heavily polluted air is definitely not a good idea. So I would not recommend my city as a good place for walking.

Newspaper and magazine

Do you often read newspapers?
Newspaper is actually not interesting to me. Although the information provided is updated and official, the boring black-and-white theme and small-sized font of daily newspaper appeared to be uncomfortable for me to read.

When do you like to read?
Unlike newspaper, I'm a fan of magazines. I'd like to keep myself updated with a wide variety of information that is offered by magazines. A colorful magazine specialized for young adults is definitely a good choice for me after work, or even when I'm on the go.

Do you prefer to read local news or international news?
I think local news is more preferable for me. I'm the type of person who cannot digest too much information that is brought about by international news. And the topics are often far from my concern. So I guess I like to narrow my area of concern down to something local.

Which is more popular in the place where you live, newspapers or magazines?
In terms of popularity I think newspaper is the winner. The content of magazines are more specific to a group of people while that of newspapers is more general for everyone regardless of age, gender and occupations. Newspaper wins also thanks to its price. The paper material and printing quality of magazine make them two to three times more expensive compared to newspaper, thus newspaper is way more affordable.

Do many people today read newspapers?
As I've mentioned before newspaper is more approachable in terms of content and more affordable in terms of price. Hence, nowadays, people of all age, gender or occupations love reading newspaper.

In the future, do you think more people than today will read magazines, or fewer people?
Personally I think less people will read magazines, as the material and printing is becoming more and more expensive. In addition, because the content is becoming highly specific for only a small group of the community, meaning that the information provided is not widely helpful, thus I think in the future not many people will continue reading magazines.

Do you think newspapers will be very important to you in the future?
Although it's not my taste, I must say that newspaper is now important to me. The information is highly official and reliable at a reasonable price. I think I should spend more time on reading newspaper from now on.

Activity near water

What activities would you do if you were spending some leisure time at a beach or near the ocean?
Obviously I'd first take some picture. The oceans looks stunning at any time to me. Then I'll go swimming. There's no such thing more relaxing than deepening myself under the water. Then probably I'll build some sandcastle or just lie down and enjoy the fresh air.

Why do some people like water sports?
The first reason I could think of is because of the water. It's fresh, it's cool and it's calming. Water is even believed to have the capability of easing our mind, which might explain why people love swimming. Besides, when it comes to diving, surfing or canoeing, the story is totally different. Extreme sports under the water bring about unforgettable experiences with the nature.

Do you think the government should invest money in developing facilities for water sports?
Since I'm not a fan of water sports, what I know about the current problem of facilities is actually limited. But personally, I think it depends on whether that type of water sports worths investing in. If it serves for practice for national or international competitions, definitely upgrading should be allowed.

Do you think that human activity is posing a threat to the oceans of the world? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of travelling on the ocean?
There are indeed a large number of human activities that have serious impacts on the oceans, namely fishing, shipping, oil spillage and tourism. Some of the consequences remain unsolved for many years. Combining with other activities taking place on land, human nowadays are continuously destroying the nature.
There is such a wonderful world under the sea that almost every human desires to discover. Travelling is a good mean to kick-start. However, a number of accidents have taken place. Therefore, travellers' safety is one of the top concerns.

Do you think it's important for children to learn how to swim?
It is extremely important for children to learn swimming. A number of accidents have taken place over the past few years due to parents' unawareness. Thus, children need to be taught to swim so they can protect themselves.

Do you think it's best for a child to be taught to swim by a parent or by someone else?
Of course the child should be taught by his parents. Unless they also don't know how to swim that they should need a guide for help. However, they should also be there with their son to encourage him or protect him.

Books

How often do you read?
As a final year student I spend most of my time on reading, especially textbooks and other reference books that my lecturers recommend in the reading list. I'm also a fan of novels or fictions, but only during summer break that I have time to read them.

Do you have many books at home?
Totally. I'm a bookaholic to be honest. I enjoy going to annual book fairs where they usually run big sales to get lots of books without much worries 'bout the price. Since my parents are also book-nerds, I think the number of books we have is even enough to open a bookstore.

Do Vietnamese people do enough reading?
If you mean reading something meaningful and realistic, I must say it's not enough. The young generation are too into technology that I don't think they have time for reading. Plus, publishing nowadays is not as strictly selective as it used to be, thus the young mostly read a number of books which indeed have no value at all, compared to Les Miserable, Gone with the wind, Jane Eyre, etc.

What kind of people like reading and what kind of people don't like reading very much?
From my point of view, I think book-nerds are those who prefer putting themselves into the character's shoe, you know, they wanna interact with the story, the characters on their own way. Some of them love to imagine how the story is supposed to continue while some keep wondering what they would do if the drama suddenly happened in their real life. Those who do not like to read are either too busy with their life that they even can't remember the characters' names, or they prefer listening, I mean, they have someone read the story and tell them the ending only.

Photography

Do you like to take photographs? Why?
If it was 3 to 4 years ago the answer is a big no. But now it has become one of my hobbies and I'm actually thinking of learning more about it. I had no idea what I can do with my iPhone until I learn to make use of its wonderful camera as well as some miracle apps. Unlike some people, I indeed want my photos to look unique, lively and somehow professional.

Do you prefer to take photos yourself or to have other people take your photos? Why?
It would be way more comfortable taking photo myself, as I can see crystal-clear how ridiculous my face expression looks like or if there's something clinging on my hair or stucking between my teeth. And in case it's a scenery photo, I can apply the techniques I've learned to produce stunning photos.

How long have you liked taking photographs?
Just recently. As a final year student, I no longer can spend hours on drawing, reading or singing. Only photography which is far more instant suits me best now. And as I enjoy my life on this campus, for example the road I walk to school everyday, the sunset, the rainbow, the trees, so photography is the best way to store my memories.

In what situations do you take photographs?
As I've mentioned, I love capturing every moment I have here, so I take photos when I and my friends hang out, when I participate in social activities of the university and meet amazing people. However, when it comes to practice for professional photography, I prefer taking photos of scenery and foods.

What kind of photos do you like to take? Why?
Foods and scenery are definitely my inspiration. I just can't sit still when beautiful breakfasts and stunning landscape keep appearing on my Instagram everyday. What is more, it is my natural instint that helps me to go find the simple uniqueness of my university, namely the sunset, the lake, the trees and flowers and show people how beautiful my university is. However, I'm not good at taking photos of people so activities or street-life is not my style.

How (why) did you become interested in photograph?
The situation was quite all of a sudden. I posted some scenery photos I took randomly on Instagram and received lots of compliments, even from those whom I'm not following. Then I realized I should develop this skill, you know, should take it seriously to keep on the good work. And the more I learn about it, the more passionate I become.

How often do you take photographs?
Not too often I must say. Since I really don't like posting boring photos with the same object all the time, so timing is everything. I believe my guts will know exactly when and how I should flick to produce high-quality photos.

Do you prefer to take pictures of people or of scenery?
I think I'm gonna go for taking scenery photos. As a beginner, things like the human facial expression, the part that needs focus, the harmonization between them and their surroundings are quite advanced for me. I really can't make the person in my photo become lively as I do with the scenery. So yeah, scenery is safer and more enjoyable.

Who do you take photos of?
Although I'm not good at taking photos of people, I do take selfies with new friends whom I met when I join in social activities. To me it's more like a reminder or something to look back, reminding me that yeah, this time last year I went out, I met amazing people and had lots of fun.

How do you keep your photos?
Printing the photos out, making an album or sticking them on the wall for decoration sound so common and also interesting. But I don't think photos worth that much time and budget, unless what I captured is apparently important to me, otherwise I only keep them in my iPhone.

Do you keep your photographs on your computer?
I don't think I need to. Firstly because my memory is somewhat similar to gold-fish memory, storing in different devices would drive me crazy. Plus, my iPhone has large memory storage so I think I won't need computer for storage.

Are there any photos on the walls of your house?
Since my parents love decorating our house, putting photos nicely on the walls of my house is an essential part of their decoration style. Some photos go with frame or plastic cover, some are sticked directly onto the wall in heart-shaped. However, I don't like seeing my face grinning everywhere in the house so I told them to let me decorate my room on my own.

Do you frame (or have you framed) any of your photos? yes, which?& why?
Although I don't usually print my photos out, I think I would store some photos of me with my high school friends or me with my family. And framing is good at preventing scratching and long-term storage, so this probably a good alternative beside albums.

Do you prefer to send postcards to people or to send photos that you took yourself? (Why?)
Firstly, the postcards are made of thicker paper, which makes it way more convenient for long-term storage as well as decoration. Also the process of sending and receiving postcards appeared to be simplier and faster compared to photos. For those reasons I think I would prefer sending postcards.

Weekends

What do you do in your spare time?
Because I'd prefer staying at home so I spend my spare time for my hobbies. Usually I'll start by turning on some music. If I have plenty of time, I'll get straight to dancing or drawing. Otherwise, if it's just a quick break, social network would definitely a good choice.

When do you spend time with your family?
Since my parents go to work for a whole day, I and my younger brother has classes everyday, so we only meet to have dinner in the evening. Although we're busy with our own schedule, we try to maintain the family-dinner as regularly as possible, so having dinner with my family has apparently become a habit.

What do you usually do on weekends? What did you do last weekend?
Weekends are my pamper days, if I don't have to go to the supermarket to fill my fridge or meet my friends. Of course the first thing I'll do every weekend is to oversleep as long as I could. Though I stay at home, weekends don't get me away from work. However, I can spend more time to chill out. I'd like to cook myself a big yummy meal and watch some TV while eating. The it's time for hobbies. I'd probably practice dancing for a while or go online chatting with my friends a bit longer. And when the night comes after planning what to do next week, I'll give myself some treatment and go to bed early.

What do other people in your hometown (or in your country) usually do on weekend?
As far as I'm concerned, people in Vietnam have a number of things to do on weekends. They can go shopping. They can play sports or they can have drink with their friends at some nice coffee shops. Due to the weather condition, most people prefer getting outdoor during nightime.

What are you going to do next weekend?
I don't have any actual plan for weekends to be honest. If I'm free and the weather is nice, probably I'd have a drink and chit chat with my friends, since we don't see each other often during weekdays. Otherwise I'll just stay home, continue with my work and enjoy myself.

Do you think it is important to make the most of your weekend?
I absolutely agree with this idea. Call me a workaholic but to me weekend is a perfect time for revising and planning ahead for the incoming week. With final-year students, our weekends are no different from weekdays except for no classes. I think we had better get familiar with it and try to make use of our weekends.

Do you feel that weekends now are more important to you than when you were a child?
Yes, weekends or day-offs have become so important to me this year. Classes take away so much time that we barely have time for self-study or revision, not to mention taking care of ourselves. Back then I was of course more relaxed. There were no pressure, no deadlines and I had my parents take care of me.

Home/ Accommodation

What kind of housing/accommodation do you live in?

For the past 21 years I have lived in a house with my family. And I think if I can move out and start making a living on my own, I would try my best  to afford a private house, since sharing a room or a flat with strangers sounds so troublesome to me.

Do you live in a house or a flat?
I live with my parents in our private house. Although during the time I studied abroad I already experienced living in a flat, but it ended up not so good so home sweet home, I think I'm okay with my house.

Who do you live with?
I live with my family. There are 5 of us and we all have our own room, which is way more comfortable as the more older we grow, the more private we need for ourselves. I think our house is big enough for us yet still a warm and cozy place that I call home.

How long have you lived there?
Although during my childhood my family had to move a lot, I've lived in this most recent house for almost 10 years. Compare to the old houses, I think this house has been the best so far.

Do you plan to live there for a long time? (If you answer you haven't lived there long)
The answer would be yes for my parents, since moving in and out is too time-consuming. Cleaning and arranging everything all over again would be like torture to them. Instead, as I'm thinking of moving out, hopefully soon I'll be able to afford living in a flat or an apartment.

What's the difference between where you are living now and where you have lived in the past?
As I've already mentioned my family moved several times when I was younger. And the most current house where we've been living for about 10 years is the best house so far. All of us have separate rooms for our needs of privacy yet a big dining room where we can spend the whole evenings together watching TV or having dinner.

Can you describe the place where you live?/ Please describe the room you live in/ What parts of  your home do you like the most?

Briefly, my humble 4-floor house locates in a small and quite street, so coming home to me is like all the craziness happened outside is left behind. Just besides my house stands a big old tree. I have my own room with walls painted violet, which was exactly my favorite color. The air outside is fresh. I usually open the window to let the wind and sunshine in, which will help cooling down my room without air conditioner. Since I spend most of my time staying at home, my room means the whole world for me .It's like a friend who is always there to share ups and downs with me day and night. So yeah, I would always miss my house, my room whenever I'm away.

Which room does your family spend most of the time in?

It's the dining room where we spend most time together. We are a traditional family that while having dinner we watch the  news and talk about our days. Endless stories have been told so we can help each other through hard times. Also we try to keep the family dinner as something we cannot go a day without, since for us it's the family bonding that lies behind.

What do you usually do in your house/flat/room?

Well definitely I'll spend some me-time there. I study, I chill with my hobbies such as reading, drawing and dancing all by myself. Sometimes I also invite one or two friends to spend time with. We'll watch some movies together and tell each other endless stories.

Are the transport facilities to your home very good?

As I've already mentioned, my house locates in a quite neighborhood. After taking the bus I still need to walk for about 5 minutes more to get home. And I also come home quite late at around 6 pm so the traffic is not too crazy.

Outdoor Activities

What do you do in your spare time?

Because I'd prefer staying at home so I spend my spare time for my hobbies. Usually I'll start by turning on some music. If I have plenty of time, I'll get straight to dancing or drawing. Otherwise, if it's just a quick break, social network would definitely a good choice.

Do you like outdoor activities?

Sadly I must say no. Since getting outdoor involves choosing clothes, meeting people and sometimes standing the weather, so most of the times I'd prefer staying inside. If I'm free I can invite some friends to come over. We can still have fun without going out.

What outdoor activities do you (most) like to do?

The outdoor activity I like to do best is my photography tour, especially when the weather is perfectly fine. I would walk around campus to find inspiration. It could be a flower, a sunshine or the road I walk everyday.

How often do you do that?

For the past few weeks I'm too busy that I hardly have time to go on my photography tour. Previously I get outside three times a week and depending on the weather condition that I could go out more or less often than that.

What outdoor sports do you like? (Why?)

Definitely swimming, especially during the summer. Not only is swimming good for my health, it also helps me get in shape. Besides, I sometimes go jogging to enjoy fresh air.

How much time do you spend outdoors every week?

As I've already mentioned, I'm quite busy these days for any physical exercises. If going to the supermarket or go window-shopping are also considered as 'getting outdoors' then yeah, I guess I get outdoor once a week.

How often do you do outdoor activities?

I'm afraid not too often. I mean it's not in my favor now. These days I'm so busy that most of the time I get outdoor is to go to school. Although I still hang out with friends, but basically we prefer having drink and a little chit chat instead of doing some sports.

What (types of) outdoor activities are popular in your country?

I think sports is particularly popular in Vietnam nowadays, as keeping fit is becoming more demanding. Or other street activities such as skateboarding, street-performing also are growing more and more popular among the young generation.

Painting

Do you like painting or drawing?

Drawing has always been  a passion since I was a child. It was a good opportunity for me to have drawing a compulsory subject in my primary and secondary school. Although as a university student, I can't spend hours on drawing, once I have inspiration, I would definitely manage my time to draw. Additionally, I'm not good at painting so I think drawing is fairly enough.

How often do you visit art galleries?

To tell you the truth, I have never visited  art galleries before. Unless I have a guide to acknowledge me, art galleries would be quite boring for me.

What kinds of things do you like to draw?

My main inspiration are Japanese manga. The drawing topic is extremely varied, however only manga seems to show great potency for my level. I have a big collection at home and as I sometimes go through it again, I can see how much I've improved.

Is it easy to learn how to draw?

I think I must say it's even challenging to a lot of people. I absolutely failed when it comes to drawing anything 'real' like people, trees and flowers. I think for those who succeed in drawing or arts in general, they first must have God-gifted taste of arts, then comes the long-term commitment that requires extreme practice and high patience.

What do you do in your spare time?

I don't have any actual plan for weekends to be honest. If I'm free and the weather is nice, probably I'd have a drink and chit chat with my friends, since we don't see each other often during weekdays. Otherwise I'll just stay home, continue with my work and enjoy myself.

Do you think it is important to make the most of your weekend?

I absolutely agree with this idea. Weekend is a perfect time for revision and also planning ahead for the incoming week. Especially with final-year students, our weekends are no different from our weekdays except for classes. And I think we had better get familiar with it and try to make use of our weekends.

Do you feel that weekends now are more important to you than when you were a child?

Yes, weekends or day-offs are becoming more important to me. Since classes take away so much time that we barely have time for self-study or revision, not to mention taking care of ourselves. Back then I was of course more relaxed. There were no pressure, no deadlines and I have my parents take care of myself.

Sunny days

I'd love to go do some outdoor activities under the sun like meeting up with some friends or do some sports, especially swimming. Or I'll grab the chance for a photography tour. Everything becomes so clear and stunning on sunny days, no matter it's early in the morning or late in the afternoon, as long as the sun shines, I'm sure I'll find inspiration almost everywhere in this university.

Would you like to stay at home or go outside when the weather is great?

I think I would say it depends on my mood and my workload. I definitely cannot go out enjoy myself if my work is still a mess, even though it was such nice weather. And unless I feel super energetic and motivated, I think most of the time I'd prefer staying inside, no matter how the sun shines or how cool the weather is.

Are there many sunny days in your hometown?

It is a big modern city so unless it's our rainy season, otherwise the sun would shine most of the time, either during one day or during the whole year. Sometimes the temperature rises so high that it feels like burning, that's when people prefer staying indoor enjoying the cool air produced by air conditioners.

Well since I was in the middle of my final exam week, I had no time to think about my birthday. I celebrated  it once the exam was over. My friends cooked dinner for me and bought me some cakes. And friends from my hometown also sent me lots of wishes. I think that humble party was fairly enough for me.

Is there a difference between the way you celebrate your birthday in the past and in the present?

There lies a big difference. When I was a child, I celebrated every year by a big party with my family and lots of friends. As I grow up, I tend to separate the celebration with my family from that with my friends.

It was like once in a lifetime, since in Vietnam the ticket price for foreign artists' concerts is so out of my reach that I can only stay home and watch online. Besides Vietnamese pop, the young generation nowadays expose to a number of different types of music. It is indeed difficult to tell which is the most popular, since from my point of view each type has roughly the same popularity. But I guess our pop music is the most popular. At least with the people I've met so far, all of them have listened or have known by heart a Vietnamese song.

Colors

What colors do you like?

Since my taste always changes, my favorite color at the moment is black. Although I just bought some black items recently, black surprisingly suit me. And electronic devices and household supplies are mostly in black-colored, probably because it doesn't show dirt and dust.

Almost every day in a week. Since my house is so far away from the university I go to that it's impossible for me to travel by motorbike. In addition, the air is heavily polluted by exhaust fume and traffic jams always take place, especially during peak hour. Thus, I'd prefer to take the bus, to save time, save gasoline and avoid the pollution.

Planes and trains regularly depart and arrive on time, during the rides. Plus, there are many convenient facilities serving particularly for certain groups of passengers. Definitely not. Riding a bike means you're exposing yourself to the unpredictable weather and to air pollution.
