Ma: It’s nine years old … but it doesn’t look it. Mo: Mmm, that’s good. And how many miles has it done? Ma: Well the mileometer says [………………………………]. Mo: That seems quite low for a car of that age. I think maybe the [………………………………]is broken! Ma: No, I think it’s because the previous owner was an old lady and she didn’t use it that much. Mo: Right, great. Can I ask why you’re selling the car? Ma: Yes, sure. I’ve just got a job in [………………………………]. I can take the tube so I don’t need a car. Mo: That’s great, congratulations. Um, icould I just check the price? I can take [………………………………]off the final price, but that’s it I’m [………………………………]. Mo: OK, that seems fair. Could I come and see the car this evening? Ma: Um, well, tonight’s not great, but I could [………………………………]tomorrow. Mo: Fine. Shall we say around 11am? Ma: OK. Shall I drive the car to you? Mo: That’s really kind, thanks. 1 live on campus. In the room here today we have students from Japan, Afghanistan, Europe and North America. Some of you have English as your first [………………………………]but the [………………………………]don’t. You all have something in common though; everyone here works in the field of law, and you are all here for our new [………………………………]learning course, which allows you to get the [………………………………]you need without leaving your country or your job. So, this two-day [………………………………]is one of only two chances that you will get to meet your [………………………………]and your classmates [………………………………]in your first year of study. The next time we meet it’ll be for a lot longer; our three-month summer [………………………………]course, which ends with your end-of-year exams. You’ll be doing all of your online learning on our Virtual Learning [………………………………], or VLP for short. This is a set of online tools which help you to study and allow your work to be [………………………………]. So, how will you use the VLP? Well, first of all, when you return to your country, you need to log on to the VLP and then [………………………………]your first [………………………………]and the reading list. Then you will need to find the books on the reading list. Some of the books will be [………………………………]to download from the VLP, but you may have to buy some on the Internet. While you are studying for your first assignment, if you have any questions, please feel free to write your tutor an [………………………………]. If you’d prefer, you can arrange to have a phone [………………………………]with your tutor instead. After you’ve [………………………………]your first assignment, you can [………………………………]to wait about a week before your tutor uploads your grade onto the VLP. Assignments are a [………………………………]small part of the course, however. A lot more time will be spent [………………………………]in seminars and listening to lectures. There is one seminar per week, which you’ll be able to participate in on the VLP. We try to choose a [………………………………]time for everyone but you may find that your [………………………………]is very early in the morning or late at night. There are also five [………………………………]per week. These are recorded and [………………………………]onto the VLP and you can listen to them at a convenient time. Now, I think you all know that [………………………………]a full-time job with studying isn’t easy. It may be that, from time to time, you can’t meet a [………………………………]. If this happens, let your tutor know and they will [………………………………]how much extra time you need. There’s also the option, in the most [………………………………], to extend your degree, to give you another year of study time. We don’t [………………………………]you to do this. However, it is an option and we can discuss it with you if [………………………………]. So, that brings me to the end of my talk. Has anybody got any questions? I know it’s a lot to take in… SECTION 3 [T = Tutor, J = Jane] T: Morning, Jane, thanks for coming to see me, take a seat. J: Thank you, Dr Coulson. T: Now, you’re [………………………………]wondering why I wanted to talk to you. J: Well, yes, it has been worrying me a bit. T: No need to worry. I just wanted to have a chat about your [………………………………]this term and in particular, [………………………………]your research project. J: OK. T: So, I shouid start by saying that you’re a very active member of the [………………………………]group. You have always [………………………………]well for the seminars by reading around the [………………………………], which is good. J: Thank you. I find the seminars very interesting. I try to listen to the group’s ideas as well. T: Yes, you are very good at listening, but I feel that you [………………………………]the ideas suggested in the group a little too easily. J: I’m sorry, I’m not sure what you mean. T: Well, do you remember the lecture on [………………………………]thinking I gave? J: Um, yes, I think so. It was all about asking questions. T: Well, that’s partly right, but it’s the type of questions you ask that is [………………………………]. For example, if one of the people in your group [………………………………]an idea, you need to ask yourself what evidence there is to [………………………………]this idea. J: OK, I’ll try to do that. You [………………………………]my research project as well? T: Yes, it’s actualty connected to the idea of critical thinking. I’m a little [………………………………]that the essay makes some [………………………………]which I’m not sure your research completely [………………………………]. For example, you make the [………………………………]that people who have difficulty with their speech probably had an [………………………………]when they were young. J: Yes, that’s because my case study had a very bad car accident as a child and since then he has not been able to speak [………………………………]. T: OK, that's interesting. But I think you need a greater [………………………………]of data to support your findings. You can’t really rely on case studies alone. They're a great source of [………………………………]information about [………………………………], but they don’t really provide us with the quantity of information needed to make general claims. Have you checked whether there are any [………………………………]papers which talk about the connection between accidents and speech? J: Not yet, no, but I will. T: Yes, do. They might analyze what happens in the brain after an accident and why this might [………………………………]speech. Remember to check the date the [………………………………]was written though; research [………………………………]to go out of date quickly. Iiave you also [………………………………]experts who argue against the connection between speech problems and accidents? J: No, I thought that that would weaken my [………………………………]. T: Well, it may well do. But it doesn’t really matter what you [………………………………]in the end, you just need to think about the [………………………………]on both sides and make a reasoned [………………………………]. J: OK, I think I see what you mean. I was also thinking about getting a higher quantity of information through sending this [………………………………]out to medical [………………………………]. Would you mind having a look at it for me… T: Yes, sure, let’s see … Well, on the whole, it’s fine, I think. But you need to be very careful about asking ‘leading questions’. What I mean by that is some of your questions may actually suggest what answer you are looking for. J: That’s [………………………………]. Thank you. I’ll change those questions. T: Good So, when do you think you’ll have a first draft for me to look at? SECTION 4 Hello everybody. So, as part of our study [………………………………]this term, we’ve researched an aspect of [………………………………]which has some kind of mystery [………………………………]to it. I’m going to talk about the [………………………………]of the Great Pyramids of Egypt. In particular, I’m going to [………………………………]on the theories surrounding how the [………………………………]were built. I’m going to start by putting pyramids into their [………………………………]context. Then I’m going to look at the different ideas [………………………………]the building of the pyramids. At the end there will be the chance to ask questions. So, why are we so [………………………………]with the building of the pyramids? Well it’s to do with their [………………………………]size and weight. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, for example, at Giza in [………………………………], has a mass of [………………………………]tons and it is around [………………………………]tall. Approximately [………………………………]stone blocks were used to build it. Today’s architects would have difficulties building a pyramid of this size and weight in the middle of a [………………………………], even with the help of powered [………………………………]. For the architects of [………………………………], who didn't have modem technology to help them, building a pyramid must have been almost [………………………………]. There’s no doubt that they had a big work force. During the [………………………………]of building this pyramid, between [………………………………]and [………………………………]workers helped with its construction. However, this doesn’t explain how workers could lift and move a stone block which [………………………………]over two tons. There have been several theories about this from leading [………………………………]. One [………………………………]theory states that a straight ramp, or slope, was built outside the pyramid and workers could walk up the [………………………………], pulling the stone block. This [………………………………], at the top, [………………………………]the theory. As you can see, one problem is the size of the ramp. In order to get it to reach right to the top of the pyramid, the ramp would have to be around 1 km long. There wasn’t the space for this sort of ramp; pyramids were built on a high [………………………………], with other buildings around them, as shown in the diagram. This second diagram shows another theory, which has been [………………………………]by French architect Jean-Pierre Houdin. Houdin believes that a shorter, 60- metre long ramp was used on the outside of the pyramid. Workers would pull the [………………………………]blocks up the ramp in order to build the base of the pyramid. As the bottom of the pyramid was being built using the [………………………………], a second ramp was being built, inside the pyramid. The internal ramp begins at the bottom, is about 6 feet wide, and is much less steep than a large, external straight ramp would be. So, I’ve outlined two of the main theories [………………………………]with the building of the pyramids. I [………………………………]think that Houdin’s theory is the most believable. However, I’d like to know your opinions. Would anyone like to say what they think or ask a question?…

IELTS Speaking Cue Card Sample 58 – Topic: A City You Want To Visit Posted: 23 Oct 2016 11:50 PM PDT IELTS CUE CARD 58Describe a City you want to visit. You should say:
BAND 8.0+ SAMPLE ANSWERHonestly speaking, I have a myriad of destinations on my must – visit list around the world. However, if I have the opportunity to choose one city, I would probably pick London, which is one of the most prominent capitals around the globe. I guess the reason why I am desired to visit London has something to do with the fact that ever since I was a kid, I have always been amazed by how gorgeous and unique the architects in London are. There are also some interesting facts about London that I want to witness in real life. One of them is the fact about Big Ben tower. So far, many people see the tall clock tower and think that it is Big Ben. But in fact, Big Ben is actually a giant thirteen – ton bell inside the tower that is rung every two hours by a two hundred – kilogram hammer. The real name of the Bell is the Great Bell of Westminster. Besides Big Ben, lots of tourists also enjoy visiting Buckingham Palace, which is also extremely appealing to me since it is the home to the Queen of England. Watching the changing of the guard ceremony that takes place in front of the Palace's gate certainly will give me lots of fresh feelings. Buckingham palace is also the second largest working palace in the world after Brunei's Istana Nurul Iman. There are many other elements making London so tempting to me and pay this amazing city a visit in the future is one of the items in my wish – list. Vocabulary:

Band 8.0 Sample Answers for 33 Topics of IELTS Speaking Part 1 (September-December 2016)- Part 1/2 Posted: 23 Oct 2016 05:00 PM PDT Check out the first part (Part 1/2) of Sample Answers for 33 New Topics of IELTS Speaking Part 1 (September-December 2016).SingDo you often like singing? I absolutely love singing. Although I just figured out my singing ability like 3 or 4 years ago and of course it's not perfect, but singing to me is just to enjoy music, you know, often when I'm into a song, I can't help myself singing it day and night. I sing whenever I feel like to, you know, when I'm bored or when I'm happy. And since I'm not that type of a so-called performer, most of the time I sing for myself. How much time do you spend in singing everyday? What kinds of music do you like to sing? I must say it depends on my mood. If I'm so down, singing some songs which bring back some past memories could make me feel somehow released, and on the days when I'm so motivated, so energetic, I would sing the songs that are full-of-hope and sunshine and dreams. Yeah, so you can tell that I don't stick with a certain kind of music. Indeed. Unless you have a beautiful voice as a Gift from God, or you at least have gained yourself some basic knowledge about notes, vocal ranges and beat, etc., that it's easier for you to go further in your singing career, otherwise yes, singing well would be a huge challenge. Well, from what I’ve known, being a singer is not easy at all. It's not just about performing, but it's also involved interaction with fans and other colleagues. Based on what I've known about showbiz, and even the music industry in general, I think that is not a place for me. | ||||||||||||||||
Band 8.0 Sample Answers for 33 Topics of IELTS Speaking Part 1 (September-December 2016)- Part 2/2 Posted: 23 Oct 2016 05:00 PM PDT Check out the second part of Sample Answers for 33 New Topics of IELTS Speaking Part 1 (September-December 2016). For Part 1/2, you can read at “Band 8.0 Sample Answers for 33 Topics of IELTS Speaking Part 1 (September-December 2016)- Part 1/2”.Home/ Accommodation What kind of housing/accommodation do you live in? For the past 21 years I have lived in a house with my family. And I think if I can move out and start making a living on my own, I would try my best to afford a private house, since sharing a room or a flat with strangers sounds so troublesome to me. Do you live in a house or a flat? Who do you live with? How long have you lived there? Do you plan to live there for a long time? (If you answer you haven't lived there long) What's the difference between where you are living now and where you have lived in the past? Can you describe the place where you live?/ Please describe the room you live in/ What parts of your home do you like the most? Briefly, my humble 4-floor house locates in a small and quite street, so coming home to me is like all the craziness happened outside is left behind. Just besides my house stands a big old tree. I have my own room with walls painted violet, which was exactly my favorite color. The air outside is fresh. I usually open the window to let the wind and sunshine in, which will help cooling down my room without air conditioner. Since I spend most of my time staying at home, my room means the whole world for me .It's like a friend who is always there to share ups and downs with me day and night. So yeah, I would always miss my house, my room whenever I'm away. Which room does your family spend most of the time in? It's the dining room where we spend most time together. We are a traditional family that while having dinner we watch the news and talk about our days. Endless stories have been told so we can help each other through hard times. Also we try to keep the family dinner as something we cannot go a day without, since for us it's the family bonding that lies behind. What do you usually do in your house/flat/room? Well definitely I'll spend some me-time there. I study, I chill with my hobbies such as reading, drawing and dancing all by myself. Sometimes I also invite one or two friends to spend time with. We'll watch some movies together and tell each other endless stories. Are the transport facilities to your home very good? As I've already mentioned, my house locates in a quite neighborhood. After taking the bus I still need to walk for about 5 minutes more to get home. And I also come home quite late at around 6 pm so the traffic is not too crazy.
Outdoor ActivitiesWhat do you do in your spare time? Because I'd prefer staying at home so I spend my spare time for my hobbies. Usually I'll start by turning on some music. If I have plenty of time, I'll get straight to dancing or drawing. Otherwise, if it's just a quick break, social network would definitely a good choice. Do you like outdoor activities? Sadly I must say no. Since getting outdoor involves choosing clothes, meeting people and sometimes standing the weather, so most of the times I'd prefer staying inside. If I'm free I can invite some friends to come over. We can still have fun without going out. What outdoor activities do you (most) like to do? The outdoor activity I like to do best is my photography tour, especially when the weather is perfectly fine. I would walk around campus to find inspiration. It could be a flower, a sunshine or the road I walk everyday. How often do you do that? For the past few weeks I'm too busy that I hardly have time to go on my photography tour. Previously I get outside three times a week and depending on the weather condition that I could go out more or less often than that. What outdoor sports do you like? (Why?) Definitely swimming, especially during the summer. Not only is swimming good for my health, it also helps me get in shape. Besides, I sometimes go jogging to enjoy fresh air. How much time do you spend outdoors every week? As I've already mentioned, I'm quite busy these days for any physical exercises. If going to the supermarket or go window-shopping are also considered as 'getting outdoors' then yeah, I guess I get outdoor once a week. How often do you do outdoor activities? I'm afraid not too often. I mean it's not in my favor now. These days I'm so busy that most of the time I get outdoor is to go to school. Although I still hang out with friends, but basically we prefer having drink and a little chit chat instead of doing some sports. What (types of) outdoor activities are popular in your country? I think sports is particularly popular in Vietnam nowadays, as keeping fit is becoming more demanding. Or other street activities such as skateboarding, street-performing also are growing more and more popular among the young generation. |
