As Professor McKinley just stated, I’ve been doing some […………………………….]into the healing powers of art and music, and I’d like to present my findings to you today. Let’s begin by going back in time to the most famous of nurses, Florence Nightingale. Way back in […………………………….], Florence Nightingale wrote in her Notes on Nursing that brightly […………………………….]flowers and art helped her patients to recover more quickly. Although her […………………………….]were viewed with […………………………….]at the time, she was – we believe – the first of many health […………………………….]to state this. Over the following years, there were many other studies that tried to prove that a link between art, music and health […………………………….], but very few of them were strictly […………………………….], so the results were variable, and therefore […………………………….]. However, one American study was different. It was found that the ones with a nice view left hospital a day earlier and needed fewer […………………………….]. This study was groundbreaking as it was the first that used […………………………….]conditions that could be measured statistically and without […………………………….]. M: Now I’d like to bring you up-to-date and take a closer […………………………….]look at three research projects on three very different types of patient. The first […………………………….]the health of unborn babies. In the study, which took place at a hospital in London, babies were played live music and their heart rates were monitored. A healthy baby’s heart would beat around […………………………….]times a minute, but researchers found that their heart rate […………………………….]by up to 15 beats a minute on average without the mother’s […………………………….]changing. This is a good sign that the baby is healthy. In addition, the mothers that took part in the […………………………….]also said they felt more relaxed. Another study looked at cancer patients who were visiting as day patients to receive their […………………………….]treatments. They were treated in a room that had […………………………….]pictures hanging on the wall. The pictures were changed each week so that the patients would not have to look at the same ones week after week. When questioned […………………………….], patients said that they felt less pain because the images helped take their mind off the […………………………….]they were receiving. When asked to rate how they felt both with and without music, the patients […………………………….]stated that they felt less anxious on the days when they had the music playing. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? SAMPLE ESSAY: Several people anticipate that publication of printed materials should come to a halt due to the emergence of computer-based reading habit. As far as I am concerned, such a trend is inevitable. Firstly, the utmost advantages in terms of costs render printed publications far eclipsed by digital versions. For instance, instead of buying many with various contents, different press agencies, just by a click to search on the Internet, users can access a rich range of reading resources with various contents, many of which are free or cost little. Besides, cutting large expenses on printing or shipping incurred by conventional printing, digitalized publications are substantially economical, granting readers more opportunities to afford quality reading materials at reasonable prices. Secondly, it is the convenience of digitalized materials that may persuade readers to halt their traditional reading habit. Indeed the availability of thousands of documents, provided domestically and internationally without geographical constraints could bring users unlimited choices and encourage them to read on electronic devices more regularly. Moreover promptness of news updates through e-materials would help individuals keep abreast of the latest news substantially quicker than traditional ones.
