Academic IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic ( In May, 2016) & Band 9 Model Essay. Posted: 19 Sep 2016 02:15 PM PDT IELTS Writing Actual Test in May, 2016 & Band 9 Argumentative Essay – Topic:Nowadays, young people admire sports stars though they often do not set a good example. Do you think this is a positive or negative development? Band 9.0 sample In recent years there has been a growing tendency for the younger generation to look up to sports stars as role models. Although not all famous athletes set a good example, I believe that the majority do have a positive influence on the behaviour of youngsters. From an individual perspective, an adolescent may idolise a well-known sportsperson who has many good qualities. No successful sports star makes it to the top without years of dedication to training and a healthy lifestyle. A youngster who seeks to emulate David Beckham or Serena Williams will be inspired to join a sports club and work out regularly at the gym as a step on the ladder of success. Other sportspeople have shown determination to overcome injuries or illness, another admirable quality that may motivate some young people to deal with such setbacks in their own lives. The Paralympic Games, for example, are watched on TV worldwide, and disabled youngsters can draw inspiration from athletes in wheelchairs or with artificial limbs competing at the highest level. From a social perspective, there are many examples of sports stars who provide a moral lesson for youngsters to follow. Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most idolised football superstars in the world, but he still finds time to support charity events and inspire his fans to join charitable campaigns. Even negative examples of sports stars who have cheated to reach the top serve as moral lessons for young people. The cyclist Lance Armstrong, who was found guilty of taking performance-enhancing drugs, was publicly shamed, though he had once been a hero because of his personal fight against cancer. In conclusion, youngsters are influenced in positive ways by their admiration for sports celebrities and the example of fitness, dedication and sometimes altruism set by those stars. (298 words) Use words/phrases: look up to: admire or respect someone Example: As a result of his work for charity, many people look up to Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft. idolise: admire someone very much Example: Micheal Jackson was idolised by millions of fans make it to the top: be very successful Example: Although she is very ambitious, she does not work hard enough to make it the top. draw inspiration from: be inspired by something to have new ideas or new ways of thinking, or to be creative Example: Many famous artists have drawn inspiration from the countryside. reach the top: become very successful at something. Example: Like all great footballers, Pele trained for years until he reached the top. performance-enhancing: things – such as drugs – that people take in order to be more successful in a sports competition. Example: After taking performance-enhancing drugs, the athlete was banned from professional sport.
Academic IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic ( In January, 2016) & Band 9 Model Essay. Posted: 19 Sep 2016 07:29 AM PDT IELTS Writing Actual Test in January, 2016 & Band 9 Argumentative Essay – Topic:Although more and more people read news on the Internet, newspapers will remain the most important source of news. Do you agree or disagree? Band 9.0 sample Many traditionalists believe that many people have access to the Internet, however, conventional newspapers will continue as the major source of news. I totally disagree with this view. The speed and convenience of the Internet in this digital age have led to the increasing popularity of online news. Firstly, the Internet is able to provide up-to-the-minute news as it happens, 24 hours a day every day. As long as 1 have my smart phone or laptop with me, 1 can connect almost instantly to the Internet, surf the websites and access the news of my choice across the globe. Secondly, more and more people now’ have access to the Internet and this trend appears set to continue. The more widespread the accessibility of the Internet, the more people will come to rely on it as their new’s source. In contrast, newspapers have drawbacks which affect their popularity. One major disincentive of relying on newspapers as a news source is the cost. Competing with freely available news online, newspaper publishers are facing the reality of falling circulation figures. Some major American newspapers have now’ introduced online versions alongside their printed editions in an attempt to arrest this trend. Another disadvantage of newspapers is the amount of paper consumed in their production. With growing environmental awareness, there is a body of public opinion which rejects buying newspapers because this involves cutting trees and transporting them to paper mills. While this may not be a major factor at present, the environmental argument will almost certainly gain ground in the future. In conclusion, I would argue that newspapers will continue to decline in importance, and more and more people will use the Internet to access the news. (283 words) Use words/phrases: traditionalists: people who prefer traditional ways of acting and thinking. Example: I agree with those traditionalists who think that drinks served in plastic cups taste worse than drinks served in glasses or normal cups. conventional: following what has been done in the past. Example: The dress code in our company is conventional – all the men must wear a suit and tie. digital age: a period when information is sent electronically. Example: In this digital age, many people have computer skills and Internet access. up-to-the-minute: having the latest information. Example:Up-to-the-minute weather forecasts are always available on the Internet. surf the websites: look through various sites on the Internet. Example: When he researched his essay, John surfed the websites that appeared to contain the most useful information. circulation figures: the figures for the number of copies of a newspaper sold each day. Example: After the price of the newspaper went up, the circulation figures immediately fell.

SECTION 2 Presenter: Good morning and welcome to the programme. This week we’re continuing our series of features on […………………………..]and I am delighted to welcome to the show, David McWilliams, widely […………………………..]as the most knowledgeable motor racing […………………………..]in England. We’ve invited David in to talk to us about what is probably the most […………………………..]and […………………………..]motor racing championship in […………………………..]today, that is, of course, Formula One. David, Formula One is now a […………………………..]racing franchise, but how did it all begin? David: Well, Formula One has its roots in the […………………………..]Grand Prix Motor Racing championship which began in the […………………………..]. After World War Two, the Grand Prix was […………………………..]into a new championship format, the one we are familiar with today, Formula One. The “Formula1 stands for the rules which all the drivers and […………………………..]must […………………………..]. The ‘One’ signifies that this racing championship is regarded as the best in the world. The first world championship race was held in […………………………..]at Silverstone in England. It was won by Italian Guiseppe Farina, in his Alfa Romeo. Farina narrowly beat his […………………………..]Juan Manuel Fangio of […………………………..]to the title, yet it was Fangio who would go on to […………………………..]the sport for the rest of the decade winning five world […………………………..]. As the years went by, the sport became a global […………………………..]and grew from strength to strength, becoming the biggest […………………………..]sport on the planet. Presenter: There’s no doubt that Formula One is big business today David, but what about the real […………………………..], the great drivers of Formula One, past and present? Who […………………………..]as the best, in your opinion? David: That’s an almost […………………………..]question to answer, but I could narrow it down to three or four amazing drivers; take your pick from any one of them. I’ll start with the […………………………..]of Formula One, the great Fangio who I’ve already […………………………..]– He […………………………..]the sport throughout the […………………………..], winning 5 titles in all, his first in 1951. his last in ’57. a record that stood for […………………………..]. Indeed, he was the first multiple championship winner. Fangio was a […………………………..]and […………………………..]Argentinian who never gave up. His greatest moment came in winning the 1957 championship when he came back from a […………………………..]pit stop to recover a 30-second deficit and take the championship on the last lap of the last race of the season. That was, of course, to be the last time he’d win the title. Another […………………………..]great is Brazilian, Ayrton Senna Senna won the world title three times, the first being in […………………………..], the last in 1991. Tragically, he died in a race […………………………..]the year after to the […………………………..]of millions of fans watching the race […………………………..]live on T.V. Senna was best known for his skills driving in the wet and he won the Monaco Grand Prix. on what is […………………………..]as the most difficult race course in Formula One, more times than any other driver. Perhaps because of this, he is regarded as the most […………………………..]gifted driver to have ever sat behind the […………………………..]. Another very […………………………..]driver was Frenchman, Alain Prost Prost won the drivers’ title four times during his career. His first title victory came in […………………………..]and his last arrived in […………………………..]. Of course, Prost will always be remembered as the driver with the third highest number of championship […………………………..], and, perhaps, even more for the fact that he was a great […………………………..]of Ayrton Senna. Those two had many great […………………………..]. Last but not, by any means, least, Michael Schumacher is the most recent of these driving greats who […………………………..]a mention. His first title was won in 1994, and he continued to […………………………..]Formula One until he won his last title in 2004. […………………………..]holds many driving records including most drivers’ championships, race victories, fastest laps, […………………………..]positions, points scored and most races won in a single season. He is also regarded as the greatest driver on paper having won seven world titles. Presenter: It sounds like Schumacher is in a league of his own; is he not clearly the best then, David, based on his record? David: It’s not that simple unfortunately. These drivers all raced in different eras with different cars and under different […………………………..]. I don’t believe we can say one was the out and out best but rather that each was the best of his time. That’s […………………………..]enough. SECTION 3 Mary: So _ let’s go over this again. We dont want to make any […………………………..]and we all need to agree we’re making the right […………………………..]. John: Absolutely, we’d have to spend a lot of money to buy Bizz- Educators Inc; almost […………………………..]. So let’s get this right, otherwise it’ll be our necks on the line. Dave: Well, I for one think this is an excellent opportunity for our company to […………………………..]and break into a new market. I say we should go ahead with the […………………………..]. At £10 million, Bizz-Educators is good value for money. Mary: Ok Dave, I know you’re very much in favour of the […………………………..]. How about you summarise the plus points of this venture for us. Mark, you’re less certain and you’ve […………………………..]some issues already. Will you summarise the […………………………..]? Mark: I’d be only too happy to. John: Right then, Dave, let’s start with you. Why is this […………………………..]so attractive? What are the upsides? Dave: It’s simple economics. Bizz-Educators has a proven track record and is an industry leader. It is a […………………………..]company with a great name, has generated excellent goodwill, and has consistently made a gross profit of more than […………………………..]per annum with a great […………………………..]return. Mark: Yeah, but what about the net profit? That’s not nearly as high. In fact, last year it made a net loss of […………………………..]Dave: Mark, that’s only because it invested in a new manufacturing plant. That’s a long-term investment to secure the company’s future. In fact, it’s a good thing, not a bad thing. It shows that the company has a clear and […………………………..]strategy going forward. Besides, a £100,000 loss is very small in real terms. It’s hardly worth being concerned about. That loss will be […………………………..]back within two years if the projected profits for 2012 and 2013 […………………………..]. The forecast is for a net profit of £500.000 in 2012 and £1,000.000 in 2013. The […………………………..]speak for themselves. This is a sound investment. John: I have to agree with Dave. Why are you so sceptical Mark? Mark: I see where Dave is coming from, but we’re […………………………..]some vital facts. First of all, this company wants to remain an independent entity. […………………………..]takeover bids are […………………………..]with danger. We know from experience; remember Davidsville Inc.? We spent a fortune researching that company and creating a […………………………..]business plan only for the merger to fall through. Mary: Mark’s right, it is always difficult to buy a company that doesn’t want to be sold. Davidsville was a […………………………..]. Continue Mark. Mark: That’s not my only concern. I am also worried that Bizz- Educators is a production-based company. We have no experience running […………………………..]like that. Our market is […………………………..]banking and trading. We would have to hire outside […………………………..]to run Bizz- Educators for us. That’s going to cost more money. Look, I’m not saying it cant be done; I’m just saving this is a high-risk […………………………..]. Plus there’s no synergy. Our business is totally different, so we can’t save costs by […………………………..]departments. John: Well, we can certainly see that this decision is not […………………………..], by any means. Mary: Maybe, but we have to come to a […………………………..]soon; it’s almost five o’clock. Mark: What’s the hurry? Can’t we postpone our decision and discuss the takeover […………………………..]again tomorrow? Mary: Mark, have you forgotten that we have to have our […………………………..]ready for tomorrow’s board meeting? That’s when the official decision will be made. Dave: Goodness, it almost slipped my mind. Well, we’d best move oa Mary, John, you were […………………………..]before. Now that you’ve listened to the pros and cons of the proposal, what do you think? John: I think it’s a great opportunity for our business. Bizz-Educators is […………………………..]profitable and it is a business on the up, ifs growing and is a very […………………………..]takeover proposition for that reason. Mary: No-one doubts that it’s a very successful business, but the question is should we invest? I say we should, provided we can […………………………..]the following: First of all, I would like […………………………..]that the management of Bizz-Educators won’t oppose us […………………………..]. That would make the bid too difficult. Secondly, I think we need to ask an […………………………..]mediator to broker the deal on our behalf. Last time we tried to […………………………..]our own takeover it was a […………………………..], as Mark said. John: I agree Mary. I’d also like us to […………………………..]another audit of the company’s books. Mark: In […………………………..]John, I dont think that’s necessary. We’ve done a thorough audit already. It’ll just cost more money. We must keep the deal […………………………..]until it goes through though: if this gets […………………………..]to the press, Bizz-Educators won’t be happy. That will make the […………………………..]even more hostile towards us. Dave: Good point, agreed I dont think we need to be concerned about […………………………..]profit margins, goodwill or […………………………..]issues. Bizz- Educators has kept very up-to-date account books. Mary: Great, then we’re all agreed the takeover should go ahead provided we proceed […………………………..]. SECTION 4 Tutor: I’d like you to give a warm welcome to our guest speaker today, Dr. Sophia Martin from the […………………………..]of Science. Dr. Martin is an expert in energy […………………………..]and she’s going to talk to us about ways we can conserve energy in the home. This is a very important subject as the world we live in is facing […………………………..]and potentially […………………………..]climate change as a result of our excessive […………………………..]and aggressive exploitation of natural resources. Dr. Martin: Thank you for the kind words Alice. You are quite right we face an […………………………..]climate crisis and it is up to each and every one of us to do our bit to help stop global warming. Believe it or not, if we all took some simple steps, we could dramatically reduce our […………………………..]footprint and help protect the […………………………..]. It is not a […………………………..], it is not silly […………………………..]talk, one person really can make a difference and I hope that after my speech today, you will understand how. But first, what exactly is your carbon […………………………..]? Basically, it’s how much you pollute the environment as an individual, or rather what volume of […………………………..]gas is emitted into the atmosphere because of your day-to-day […………………………..]. The key to stopping global warming is for each of us to […………………………..]our carbon footprint, and if we […………………………..]energy in the home, we can achieve some truly dramatic results. Our homes are actually very […………………………..]from an energy conservation […………………………..]. Indeed, more than […………………………..] of all homes arent insulated enough. This means that they lose heat and that […………………………..]waste a lot of energy, not to mention money, on heating during winter. So the first step is to fit […………………………..]insulation in the attic and outer walls of your home. This can reduce your heating bills by as much as […………………………..]. What’s more, the government offers grants to people who want to have their homes […………………………..]so it isn’t a very expensive […………………………..], and you will probably recoup your investment within a couple of years. I would encourage everyone to consider this course of […………………………..]; both your wallet and the environment will thank you. Believe it or not, there are even simpler things we can do. For a start, never paint your […………………………..]walls in dark colours. Dark colours […………………………..]heat therefore, you will waste more energy trying to keep you home warm. Always use light colours on interior walls. Did you know, a […………………………..]that is 50% full uses almost the same energy as one that is […………………………..]full? The moral of the story is to wait until your dishwasher is packed before switching it on; it’ll save you and the environment. The same is true of most household […………………………..], so try to use them only when necessary. Another startling fact is that replacing just one normal light bulb with an energy-[…………………………..]light bulb will save you […………………………..]over the lifetime of the […………………………..]. Now just imagine the savings if you replaced all the bulbs in your house. Having large windows seems to be in […………………………..]right now, yet it makes no sense whatsoever from an energy saving […………………………..]. Windows are one of the biggest causes of heat loss. If you have large windows at home, my advice would be to close the curtains and blinds as often as possible. This will help your rooms retain heat Another simple way to retain heat is to close all inside doors, especially ones which lead into […………………………..]parts of the house. Carpets and rugs are great floor […………………………..]. It’s a good idea to have these fitted in rooms where heat […………………………..]is an issue. I would strongly advise people to consider […………………………..]solar pan¬els on their roofs. You don’t need to live in a […………………………..]sunny place to reap the benefits of these; even our English weather will suffice. […………………………..]can generate enough energy to heat your entire hot water supply, which is fantastic when you think how much you pay for this […………………………..]at the moment. And, of course, I would encourage people to continue […………………………..]and […………………………..]waste. The next generation will thank us if we act now and rightfully condemn us for failing to. Well, I can only hope you have found this speech […………………………..]and that I have highlighted the importance of the individual to the cause of […………………………..]protectioa Thank you for your attention, I’ll hand you back to Alice now. IELTS Cue Card Sample 40 – Topic: a difficult decision you made Posted: 19 Sep 2016 01:52 AM PDT IELTS Cue Card for IELTS Speaking Part 2:Describe a difficult decision that you made. BAND 9.0 SAMPLE ANSWER: It was when I prepared the application form for the university entrance exam that I had to make an important but difficult decision. At that time, I was at a crossroads, where I had to decide which university to apply for. Actually, my interest was in economics, which was taught in two separate universities, one of which specialized in international trade while the other focused more on the national economy. Fortunately, my sister, who graduated from an economics college, gave me some sound advice. Having weighed up the pros and cons of each school, she encouraged me to choose the university specializing in international trade. Finally, I applied for this school after thinking carefully about all the options. At present, I feel so satisfied with the learning environment of this university that I am always thankful for my decision as well as my sister‟s advice. Without her guidance, I probably wouldn‟t be as content with my university life as I am. VOCABULARY
IELTS Cue Card Sample 39 – Topic: a recent event made you happy Posted: 19 Sep 2016 12:45 AM PDT IELTS Cue Card for IELTS Speaking Part 2:Describe a recent event (or something you did) that made you happy. BAND 9.0 SAMPLE ANSWER: Today, I am going to share with you a recent event that made me happy. A month ago, my friend and I attended a hip-hop and contemporary dance performance sponsored by the Japan Foundation Center, Goethe Institute, and L‟Espace Center called "Europe Meets Asia". The tickets were free so we did not see any reason for not going; we both like dancing a lot. The performance was given by artists from Japan and Israel. It was a combination of hip-hop and contemporary dance. With their talents, they created such an amazing performance. We were surprised to see how flexible they were while performing. The dance also delivered a message which could be interpreted differently by different people. To me, it was about young people in the modern world, bored with the daily routine of life and trying to escape from this boredom in order to do something spectacular or at least pursue their passions. After a 40-hour workweek, this event was like a fresh breeze in my life. It was a new experience that I had rarely had before, because in Hanoi, we don‟t get to see art performances by foreign artists that often.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Band 8.0 Sample Answer:Function of history in modem life has become a heated topic of discussion in the modem world. Despite the arguments refuting the importance of On the one hand, some people believe that historical knowledge is of no useful benefits for modern life. One noticeable reason is that learning about historical and sorrowful events in the past would bring painful feelings and loss of faith in humanity rather than certain benefits. For example, memorizing terrorist attacks or inhumane events in the past seems to leave doleful emotion and render modem people miserable since they cannot reverse the history. In addition, most knowledge legacies m the past have become outdated in the modem contexts in which breakthroughs take place daily. Therefore, findings from researching history would be deemed unnecessary and have limited values to modem development. On the other hand, I am of the opinion that one of the most valuable references nowadays comes from history. Firstly, young generation can have more opportunities to access and inherit legacies from their ancestors. Past knowledge and discoveries could create a concrete foundation on which people can further develop further advances with the goal of generating considerable contributions to modem humankind. Secondly, learning mistakes in the previous growing process are immensely precious experience that modem people can use to avoid previous generations mistakes. For example, by analyzing causes leading to disastrous world wars, governmental officials can withdraw lessons learnt, trying to compromise and abstain from provocations triggering another war. In conclusion, from the above reasons, even though the role of history is undermined by some people, I would embrace the contribution of history as humankind's precious source of information.

CONCLUSION: Restatement of the thesis SAMPLE ANSWER: Every country, no matter how affluent, has groups of people who live in poverty. Poor people can be described as those who are lacking in goods and services to the point where their lives become miserable. They may lack such important goods as food and shelter and such services as health care and education. It is interesting in this article to examine some of the main causes of poverty and suggest some possible solutions. A major cause of poverty has always been war. The recent war in Afghanistan saw people evicted from their homes and deprived of food and shelter, and of services such as hospitals, schools, gas, water and electricity. Media coverage of the war caused worldwide revulsion. The solution to war may be such universal rejection that the world leaders will not consider it as an option and seek peaceful negotiation instead. Some countries such as India and China have the problems of both overpopulation and underdevelopment. They simply do not create enough wealth per capita for their people to escape from poverty. This is changing in many places as countries have adopted effective measures to reduce their birth rate and develop their resources. Other countries are facing the problems of unemployment and natural disasters. The possible solutions for some countries include massive aid from the rest of the word whereas for bigger countries like China and India, the best solutions lie in the development of their national economy and the implementation of birth control policies. In conclusion, poverty can be attributed to the frequent occurrences of war, natural disasters as well as overpopulation, unemployment and underdevelopment. The problems at times appear overwhelming, with no solution. Despite this, much good work is being done, with more people than ever enjoying a good quality of life. Useful vocabulary
