Cambridge English Advanced Phrasal Verb In Use – (Ebook)

Cambridge English Advanced Phrasal Verb In Use Book can help you take your knowledge of phrasal verbs to a more advanced level.

It is intended for students who already have at least an upper intermediate level of English. This book contains roughly 1,000 phrasal verbs, and related nouns and adjectives which are presented in this book were all selected from those identified as significant by the CANCODE corpus of spoken English developed at the University of Nottingham in association with Cambridge University Press, and the Cambridge International Corpus of written and spoken English. The phrasal verbs selected are accordingly also to be found in the Cambridge Phrasal Verbs Dictionary where you can find additional usage notes and examples.

The book has 60 two-page units. The left-hand page explains the phrasal verbs that are presented in the unit. You will usually find an explanation of the meaning of the phrasal verb, an example of it in use and, where appropriate, some comments on when and how it is used. The exercises on the right-hand page check that you have understood the information on the left-hand page and give you practice in using the material presented.

The units are organised into different sections.

First, it starts with important information about phrasal verbs in general (Units 1-4): what they are, how their grammar works and so on. We strongly recommend that you do these units first.

The next section looks at some interesting aspects of more advanced phrasal verbs, dealing with such important issues as collocation, register and metaphor. As these are themes that are returned to throughout the book, it is a good idea to work through these units before progressing to other more specific units.

After these two introductory sections, there is a section dealing with some of the most common particles used in forming phrasal verbs. Working on these units will help you to gain a feeling for the force of these particles and will help you have a feeling for the meaning of a phrasal verb you are meeting for the first time.

The next two sections deal with Concepts (e.g. Change) and Functions (e.g. Arranging things). These sections are followed by a large number of topic-based units focusing on different aspects of Work, Personal life and The world around us.

The final section looks at some of the most common verbs which are used to form phrasal verbs.

The book has a key to all the exercises so that you can check your answers. At the back of the book, you will also find a useful Mini dictionary. This provides clear definitions of all the phrasal verbs and related noun and adjective forms that appear in this book. The Mini dictionary also indicates the unit number where you can find a particular phrasal verb.

Grammar For IELTS: A, An, The (Part 2)

Continuing the previous Grammar For IELTS post, today, we will learn how to use the article “THE” and when no article is needed before a noun in English.

1. Definite Article THE

The definite article is the. Use the with definite singular, plural, and noncount nouns. Use the to indicate that you are referring to something specific. Here are the main rules for definite articles.

  • Use the to refer to a specific thing or person. This includes nouns made specific by prepositional phrases or adjective clauses.

   Specific: The window in the kitchen has been closed all day.

General: A window is usually rectangular in shape. (= Windows are usually rectangular in shape.)

 Specific: The pilots who work for that airline will go on strike at midnight.

General: A pilot wears a uniform. (= Pilots wear a uniform.)

  • Use the for the second and all subsequent references to the same item. Note that sometimes different nouns are used to refer to the same thing. Using a variety of vocabulary items with the article the is an excellent device for coherence in your writing.
A deadly car crash (noun A—first reference) involving three vehicles (noun B—first reference) occurred on Highway 62 last night. Police said that the wreck (noun A—second reference) happened just after midnight. Though damage to the three cars (noun B—second reference) appeared to be minimal, the accident (noun A—third reference) claimed two lives.

Crash -> wreck -> accident: Notice how crash becomes wreck and then becomes accident. Vehicles -> cars: Vehicles becomes cars. These different words still refer to the same original thing, and the article changes from indefinite (a) to definite (the).

  • Use the with a superlative, with a ranking, or with a comparison between amounts.

Many sports offer good exercise, but tennis is the best sport for people of all ages.

The third part of any joke is usually the punch line.

The more time you spend editing, the more corrections you’ll make.

  •  Use the with the parts of something or members of a group.

I like this watch. The minute hand is blue, and the hour hand is red.

Today the small-business owner finds it hard to compete against superstores.

The is used to talk about a body part in a more formal way, for example, in science or health discussion.

The stomach contains special liquids to help with digestion.

However, when we are referring to our own bodies, we use possessive adjectives, not the.

 My stomach hurts because I ate all the chocolates.

  • Use the when the item is known to both the writer and the reader (or to the speaker and the listener), when the context makes it clear, or when there is only one possible item.

Rick: Where’s your phone?

Cara: It’s next to the refrigerator,

  • Use the in general statements about a whole species (kind), class, or category.

 The Apple computer was not developed by Bill Cates.

 The green sea turtle is on the threatened and endangered list.

More medicine is needed for the sick. (the sick = sick people)

The use of the + SINGULAR NOUN is more formal than the more conversational style of using plural + no article.

 The tiger is native to India, (formal)

 Tigers are native to India, (less formal)

  • Use the with unique, one-of-a-kind items (especially when talking about nature).

The sun is shining directly overhead.

Take a look at the sky! The clouds are moving fast today.

There’s nothing you can do to change the past, so plan for the future.

  • Use the with certain proper nouns: oceans; seas; rivers; groups of islands, lakes, mountains; deserts; plural names of countries; areas identified by direction words; buildings; schools with of /for; and sports teams.

the Atlantic Ocean/        the Hawaiian Islands/          the United States

 the Sears Tower/            the University of Texas/       the Academy for the Arts

 the Boston Red Sox/      the North

2. No Article

In English, articles are not always necessary with nouns. Here are the main rules indicating when no article is needed before a noun.

  • No article is needed when you are referring to the whole group, class, or category.

Most people agree that more tax money should be spent on education.

We need to buy furniture for the new house.

Tigers are native to India.

  • No article is needed when you are referring to a thing in general, rather than to a specific member of a group.

The most popular subjects are English, Math, and World History.

Love is easier for some people to express than for others.

I’ve never been interested in studying nature.

  Beaches offer a place to play or to relax.

Exception: Use an article when you refer to a specific kind within a general thing.

I understand English well, but I sometimes have difficulty understanding the English spoken by young children.

The love he felt for his children couldn’t be measured in words.

He developed a sudden interest in the nature of rainforests.

The beach he runs on is pure white sand.

  • No article is needed with names of cities, states, countries, and continents. Exceptions include place names with the words united, union, or republic of, as well as plural names.
     
    New York Florida France Argentina Asia North America
  • No article is needed with a (single) lake, but use the with all other bodies of water.

(Exception: the Great Salt Lake)

  • No article is needed with directions, but use the with areas identified by direction words.

Go north on the highway. I live south of the city.

He lives in the South, (the southern part of the U.S.)

  •  No article is needed with diseases:

Some exceptions to this rule include the following:

the flu the measles the mumps the chicken pox

Use a with injuries, symptoms, and other nondiseases:

a cold a headache a heart attack a broken leg
  • No article is needed with the names of people, businesses, and most magazines.

 Dr. Jenk’s office is next to Brenda’s office.

Microsoft has its head office in the state of Washington.

I just bought a subscription to Newsweek.

Exception: With a person’s title that has no proper name, use the article.

This is the President.

  • No article is needed with months, dates, days, holidays, or seasons.

Christmas is December 25th.

We travel to California every winter.

Exception: Use the with dates in a phrase using the preposition of

   The 12th of August

  • No article is needed with chapters, numbers, highways, and interstates.

  • No article is needed with commonplace words in certain idiomatic expressions. No article implies that an activity is taking place at that location; the refers to the place of the activity.

Marguerite is still in bed. (NOT in the bed)

They’re on vacation. (NOT on the vacation)

W 2     Well there's the Huron Gold Mine. It's just a half-day trip leaving here at 9.30am and arriving back at 2.00pm. It only takes half an hour to get there which is good. Section 2. You will hear a radio presenter interviewing a man about the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Anne: Well, good morning again everyone and welcome to “[………………………………]", the weekly New South Wales Radio programme on [………………………………]of general interest from our local area. Today I have in the studio Mr. George Symonds. Good morning George.

George: Good morning Anne.

Anne: So, what are you going to talk to us about today George?

George: Well, for people from New South Wales and [………………………………]Sydney, this will be of great interest – I hope. I'm going to tell you a little about Sydney Harbour [………………………………].

Anne: Wow. That'll be so interesting.

George: I think so. To start with I'd like to tell you a little about the size of the bridge. The arch span is [………………………………]and the weight of the steel arch is [………………………………]. The summit is 134m above mean sea level, though it can actually increase by as much as [………………………………]on hot days as the result of steel expanding in heat. The two pairs of pylons at each end are about [………………………………]high and are made of [………………………………]and [………………………………]. The steel used for the bridge was largely imported. About [………………………………]came from the United Kingdom but the rest was Australian-made. The granite was [………………………………]in Moruya down the coast, and the concrete is also Australian.

Anne: So, most of the steel used to make our great bridge actually came from England?

George:          Yes, I'm afraid so. However the work force were all Aussie!

Anne: Thank God for that. When was the bridge actually built?

George:          The bridge was opened in 1932 but work first began in 1924, with the construction of the bridge [………………………………]and spans, with two separate teams building the arch on each side working towards each other. The arch was successfully joined on [………………………………]. I'm afraid that working practices weren't very fair in those days and the local government [………………………………]438 homes which were in the way of the approaches, and as many as 800 families living there were [………………………………]without compensation. The standards of industrial safety were [………………………………]too. 16 workers died during its construction, mainly from falling off the bridge.

Anne: I didn't realise that.

George: Yes. The bridge was formally opened on the 19th March 1932 by the Premier of New South Wales, Mr Jack Lang. When it was opened, it was the longest single span steel [………………………………]bridge in the world and it was one of the greatest engineering [………………………………]of its time. Several songs were also [………………………………]in advance for the occasion but these have now been largely lost or forgotten. However, three [………………………………]stamps were issued to [………………………………]the opening of the bridge and these still exist. One of these stamps, with a face value of five [………………………………], is now worth several hundred dollars today.

Anne: So, that's the history of the bridge. Is the bridge still the same today as when it was built?

George: No, it's quite different. The basic [………………………………]is the same of course. Originally the bridge was constructed to carry a road, two sets of tram lines and [………………………………]. In 1957, the two tram lines were removed when Sydney [………………………………]its trams, thus giving the bridge two more traffic lanes.

Today it carries eight traffic lanes, two [………………………………]lanes and a footpath along its eastern side. One of the eastern traffic lanes is now a [………………………………]bus lane. The bridge is often crowded and in [………………………………]the Harbour Tunnel was opened to help carry the traffic load. More than [………………………………]vehicles cross the bridge each day. Before the Harbour Tunnel was opened this figure was as high as [………………………………]and would be much higher today if it were not for the Tunnel. Pedestrians, horses and [………………………………]are not allowed on the bridge anymore.

Anne: Wow. The bridge actually carries that much?

George: Oh yes. Actually, before the Harbour Bridge opened, it was completely packed with railway [………………………………], trams and buses to stress test its load bearing [………………………………]. While it has had many traffic jams since and half a million people walked across it on its [………………………………], it has probably never been asked to carry that much of a load since.

Anne: Amazing. And I suppose the toll for crossing the bridge has changed a bit too?

George: I'm afraid so!! The [………………………………]toll charged for a car was 6 pence while a horse and rider was charged 3 pence. Today the toll costs [………………………………]but is only charged when travelling to the South as an [………………………………]measure to speed up traffic flow.

Phil     Hi Mel. Hi Laura. Sorry I'm a bit late. I got held up by the bus. It just didn't come for ages.

Mel     Don't worry. You're only a couple of minutes behind and we've only just been chatting.

Laura  Right then. We're here to [………………………………]the survey that we're going to do. Mel, you said that you'd [………………………………]with Professor Donald Walker what type of survey we were going to do.

Mel     Yes. I spoke to Professor Walker two days ago and I told him that the [………………………………]that we were [………………………………]were a telephone survey, a street survey and a mail survey. Laura  Well, the ideal figure for a survey such as this should be about [………………………………]but that will take us about a month to get that many people and we just don't have that much time. On the other hand, if we just choose 100 people, the survey won't be [………………………………]significant.

Mel     OK, that's those two out then.

Laura  I think the other ones in town were good too. The [………………………………]will have too many students and that will create too great a bias to our [………………………………]. We need a good cross section of the population and anywhere too close to the university won't give us that.

Phil     Laura's right. So, out of the other town ones, I think that the two on the High Street corners are good.

Mel     I don't agree. The High Street corner with College Road will be good but the corner with Wilkins Road is too far out. Not enough people will come by there.

Laura  Yes, Mel's right there. We should use Dobbins [………………………………]store instead.

Section 4. You will hear part of a further education marine biology lecture.

Good morning everyone and welcome to this further education lecture on [………………………………]biology. Today we are going to look at the [………………………………]. The discovery of the coelacanth has been compared to finding a [………………………………]walking around today over [………………………………]years after it went extinct.

The story began a few days before Christmas in [………………………………]when the first living coelacanth was discovered off the east coast of South Africa, at the mouth of the Chalumna River. The fish was caught in a shark gill net by [………………………………]Goosen and his crew who, recognising the [………………………………]nature of their catch, alerted the local [………………………………]in the small South African town of East London.

The Director of the East London Museum at the time was Miss Marjorie Courtney-Latimer after whom the Coelacanth was eventually named. Miss Courtney-Latimer offered bounties to [………………………………]for unfamiliar fish. It was Miss Courtney-Latimer who alerted the [………………………………]South African [………………………………]Dr J.L.B. Smith, who initially identified the fish, and [………………………………]informed the world about this amazing discovery. This first coelacanth led to the discovery of the first documented population, off the remote Comoros Islands, between the mainland of Africa and [………………………………]. For 60 years this was presumed to be the only coelacanth population in [………………………………].

Originally it was a concern that the Coelacanth might have a very limited range and that [………………………………]along the Comoros Islands might wipe it out. However, scientists were amazed when, on [………………………………], an American scientist discovered a Coelacanth population in Indonesia. Dr. Mark Erdmann was on a [………………………………]trip to the area investigating a coral reef research site when he [………………………………]a strange fish being [………………………………]into the fish market. He recognized the fish as a coelacanth and [………………………………]a picture before it was sold.

Dr. Erdmann's subsequent research [………………………………]that the people from Sulawesi had a name for it, raja, 'king of the sea'. The Sulawesi coelacanth colony is about [………………………………]east of where the Coelacanths were previously known to occur in the Western Indian Ocean.

Both Sulawesi and Comoros coelacanths are quite different from all other living fish. But perhaps the most interesting feature of the Coelacanth is that it has paired, lobed fins, which move in a similar fashion to our arms and legs. Coelacanths also have an extra [………………………………]on their tail and a [………………………………]column that is not fully developed. They are the only living animal to have a fully functional [………………………………]joint, a division that separates the ear and brain from the nasal organs and eye, and allows the front part of the head to be [………………………………]when the fish is feeding. The brown Sulawesi coelacanth and the steel blue Comoros [………………………………]share these unusual characteristics.

The discovery of the Coelacanth in 1938 is still considered to be the [………………………………]find of the century. This living fossil comes from a lineage of fish that was thought to have been extinct since the time of the dinosaurs. Coelacanths are known from the [………………………………]record dating back over [………………………………]years, and peaked in abundance about 240 million years ago. Before 1938 they were believed to have become extinct [………………………………]80 million years ago, after [………………………………]disappearing from the fossil record.

How could the Coelacanth disappear for over 80 million years and then turn up alive and well in the [………………………………]century? The answer seems to be that fossil Coelacanths appeared to live in environments with clay [………………………………]with plenty of [………………………………]activity. Modern coelacanths, both in the Comoros and Sulawesi inhabit caves and [………………………………]in vertical marine reefs, at about [………………………………], environments not [………………………………]to fossil creation.

In 1991 scientists got a better understanding of the fish when the Comoros got their independence from France and French [………………………………]on research were lifted. This allowed scientists to study the fish off the Comoros Islands. As the animal hides in underwater caves some 300 to [………………………………]feet down during the day and comes out at night to feed, diving is not an option and previously only [………………………………]specimens had been available for study. But this time the scientists had their own [………………………………]so they could study the coelacanth in its natural habitat through [………………………………].

I would like to talk about my favorite classic novel called The Godfather, which is written by a well-known Italian author, Mario Puzo. I came across this novel when I was trying to find a dictionary at a bookstore. It was published in hard-cover version and there was a colourful
illustration on the front which caught my eye.
At first, although I was not much impressed by the novel‟s preview, I still bought it and started to read the story right after getting home. Surprisingly, the more I read "The Godfather", the more it appealed to me. This novel told the story of an Italian imaginary character named
Vito Corleone, who was a mafia boss in America after World War I. What attracted me in this story was the way the author described Vito‟s tricks to survive in a chaotic society.

Thanks to this novel, I learned a lot about the course of American history in that lawless period. After finishing this book, I read some more novels by Mario Puzo and they were all fascinating. I realize that reading books is a good way to gain knowledge; therefore, everyone should get into the habit of reading.
